Politics of the Grotesque (978-84-18-76020-4) de Fayos Pérez, Paula (Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica ) Comprar Libros de Ciencias Humanas .Arte .. Encuadernación: Tapa dura The impact of Goyas work, and in particular the Caprichos (1799), on 19th-century French art was immense, long-lasting and multifaceted. While in Spain Goya was associated with his output as a court painter, in France he was known as the author of the Caprichos, interpreted by the Romantics as a satire of the last years of the 18th century in Spain. However, this view overlooked the fact that the true modernity of Goyas work lies in its universality: as a mirror in which the essence of humanity is reflected, free of patriotism. The same can also be said of monsters and witches, which are nothing more than distorted reflections of the human being. It could be said that it was a mutual influence: Goya helped to shape French Romantic art and, incidentally, the beginnings of modern art and the Romantics in turn shaped his critical image. This study questions the established interpretation of the Aragonese artist that until recently dominated the bibliography based on romantic stereotypes that, in many cases, have been perpetuated to the present day. Goya became known in the French marketthe main recipient of his workthrough his graphic production, promoted by artists, critics and collectors such as Charles Yriarte, Paul Lefort and Eugne Piot, most of them in collaboration with the Spanish artist and dealer Valentín Carderera. Goya's influence can be divided into two very broad areas: the aesthetic and the political. On the one hand, the artists of Romantisme noirfocused on the taste for the grotesque and the literary vision of Spainsaw Goya as the last representative of the Spanish school. On the other hand, the political impact of his work can be seen in the satirical engravings produced by artists such as Honoré Daumier and J. J. Grandville, who considered him a politically committed caricaturist who fought against censorship and mocked the nobility and the clergy. The case of Eugne Delacroix offers the richest example of Goya's influence on 19th-century French art, here supported by a catalogue of forty copies that the Frenchman made of the Caprichos, some of them previously unpublished. Paula Fayos Pérez received her PhD in Art History from the University of Cambridge in 2019 with a thesis on Goya's influence on 19th-century French art and literature. She worked as a researcher in the private collection of the Duke of Wellington at Apsley House (London) and Stratfield Saye House (Hampshire), and, before receiving a Leonardo Fellowship from the BBVA Foundation, she obtained a Margarita Salas postdoctoral fellowship to research and teach at the University of Strasbourg and the Complutense University of Madrid. In 2023 she organized the international conference Goya: grotesque / collecting. She has published articles in...
